Myofascial Release (MFR) is a very effective, yet gentle manual technique that stretches and releases restricted connective tissue, helps correct movement dysfunctions and relieves pain.
The primary focus of this techniqe is the body's fascial system. In a healthy state, the fascia helps maintain the body's postural state through a balance of tension and elasticity. Through injury or inflammation, the fascia can lose some of its elasticity or become adhered to other tissue, placing undesired tension on the musculature, bones, joints, nerves and other structures. This results in compensatory muscle tightness, structural dysfunction, postural problems, and pain.
Through the application of directed, low intensity, sustained pressure for a minimum of 2 minutes, the fascial will begin to lengthen. To achive lasting results, the fascia must be allowed to release on its own, and not forced. Forcing the fascia wil only result in a short term result as the fascia will return back to its restricted state. For this reason, an effective treatment can not be achived in less than a 3/4 hour treatment with an hour treatment being optimal.
Patients with conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic pain have shown to achive beneficial results with myofascial release. If you have tried many other forms of treatment with limited or no results, myofascial release may provide the long lasting results that you are wanting.
